Block Work

Published in

There are many different varieties of concrete blocks. But, the majority of building blocks are simple rectangular blocks of cement, which are gray or white concrete. The average concrete block measures 1ft 6in x 9in and can range in thickness from 3 inches to 9 inches. There are special instances where this thickness may differ a classic example of this would be a foundation block which although maybe thicker if required will still measure about the same.

There is another terms you may come across called Brick-size concrete blocks or otherwise known as coursing bricks these are mainly used for infilling you'll find above doors and window lintels. As with everything in construction in the dimensions above can actually differ as some manufacturers may specify normal sizes, which include a 3/8 inch allowance for mortar on the length and also the height.

As I'm sure you are aware most concrete blocks are weatherproof. However it must also be noted that foundation blocks should also be frost resistant and moisture proof and the reasons for this should be obvious.

It's always recommended that you deal with a merchant that has been highly recommended this to you. You should always make sure when any blocks are delivered to your site that they are unloaded as near as possible to the location the last thing you need to be doing is having to worry about moving these a second time. It's also recommended that they are stacked on a flat dry base and make sure that you cover to use it a polythene sheet so they are protected from rain and frost.
